Word Whisper Cian M. Week #4

Our book Anthem, clearly shows that our main character and others in the community use words to describe a group to describe themselves. This is shown here, “We are old now, yet we were young this morning, when we carried our glass box through the streets of the City to the Home of the Scholars” (part 7) and in other parts of the book as well. This affects us as the readers because a lot of us believed that Equality was a group and the story was about a group. The reason for the author to write this way is very apparent he wanted to get across that it is all about the group and you as an individual is unimportant.

This is an image created on our blog that showcases that some of us believed that Equality was a group

In this quote, “We are old now, yet we were young this morning, when we carried our glass box through the streets of the City to the Home of the Scholars” (part 7) the author is using a metaphor to describe our main character. Old and young are not use to describe age, but rather to describe wisdom. Through that one experience our main character gained wisdom and wisdom is often connected to old age and not some much connected with young age. Not understanding this as readers would simply put a question in our mind and leave us not understanding that he learned something about his community.

Another quote from the book also showcases a confusing metaphor, “And slowly, slowly as a flush of blood, a red flame trembled in the wire. Then the wire glowed.” As flush of blood is describing the slowness and how the wire began to glow. This can affect you as a reader in little way regarding the story, but it helps you understand the language of the characters in the book.

Another quote in Anthem showcases high level imagery, “The leaves rustle over our head, black against the last gold of the sky.” The Author was using this imagery to show the bliss that our main character feels in the uncharted forest. Misunderstanding or not understanding this sentence would leave you with a moment of confusion over whether or not our main character like the uncharted forest our not.

  1. Cian,

I like how your image relates to your text about the image. But, in the second paragraph, you relate the drawing to the book and the book only. You should connect it to yourself, and do this by showing wisdom you or a friend has gained from a saying. Or did this quote give you wisdom too? This will help show readers that text could help other people gain wisdom.
