Street Sweepers are a minor job in Equality 7-2521's community, so people see the workers as minors in the community. I think that when Collective 0-0009 first met Equality 7-2521, he liked him, but as they got to know each other better, and when he discovered that he was a Street Sweeper, he thought that Equality 7-2521 wasn't capable being a World Council of Scholars, just because of his job. If Equality 7-2521 had another job that could help the World Council of Scholars, I think that Collective 0-0009 would like him.

Why did the council outlaw mirrors?
In my opinion, mirrors can give you a positive effect, or a negative effect. When you look yourself in
the mirror, you normally look at your flaws, but other people look at your beauty, and sometimes people can get jealous. In Equality 7-2521's community, they decided to outlaw mirrors, because they can't have their own opinions, the can't even say "I". In conclusion, for everyone to be equal, they decided for them not to know what they really look like, so they wouldn't judge themselves and think of them as one individual person.
Hi Gigi! Your post is great and you have images with a very high quality! Good job!

The world Equality lives in, is a society where they mostly value brotherhood and equality. It is also a society where they are completely against selfishness. I believe that by looking in the mirror, people start to worry about their appearance. This is not admitted in Equality's society because "all men must be equal." So, they banned/outlawed mirrors to prevent that from happening.

ReplyDeleteGigi,
ReplyDeleteYour post was overall very good but the thing that really stood out to me was the first question." Does Collective 0-0009 not like Equality 7-2521, only because he is a Street Sweeper?" Even though they want everybody to be equal I feel that these jobs in this society is how they tell what "class" you're in. I realize the point of the story is that they're all equal, but the point of the book that know matter how hard you try equality is something almost unreachable.

Why mirrors are outlawed is an interesting question, but the main topic is equality. I believe that if you start looking at yourself in the mirror you would worry about your appearances, and you would start to compare yourself to others. Isn't this what we are doing now a days? I could already predict this ;law in the beginning because they didn't want anyone to be selfish. I would have to compare this to Divergent, to abnegation. Abnegation meant not being selfish, and their rule was only every couple of months you could look at yourself in the mirror, meaning most of the time there wasn't a mirror. This was a connection I had in the beginning of the book and your post made me refer back to it.
