Anthem (Part 1 & 2) Connection Captain - Ariana

From reading part one and two of Anthem, I think the book reminds me of the movie Divergent. In Divergent there are five different factions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intelligent. You stay in your faction until you turn sixteen, once you turn sixteen you have to take a test that recommends what faction you should go to, but when Tris (the main character) takes her test her results is "divergent", which means she thinks differently than the rest and dose not have a specific place to go, and if someone found this out they would kill her. I think this is much like Anthem because, in Anthem until you turn fifteen you stay in the Home of the Scholars with all your "brothers", but when you turn fifteen they tell you what you are going to do for the rest of your life, and Equality 7-2521 are kind of like Tris in the sense that they think differently than their "brothers", so they are kind of Divergent.

"They had torn out the tongue of the Transgressor, so that they could speak no longer." This part of the book reminds of The Hunger Games because, whoever broke the law, as one of their punishments got there tongues chopped off and would have to be servants to the Capitol. Another thing I find similar between the two books is that in the Hunger Games no one dares disobey the Capitol, much like every one in Anthem. And in Anthem they mention how every once in a while someone would run away alone, like in the third book Mokingjay where Katniss runs away to District 13, that everyone thinks is destroyed.

  1. Hi Ariana, your post is great since it is very detailed and your images are easy to see.

I agree with you, Anthem is very similar to Divergent, but it also has some differences. I also wonder if Equality 7-2521 will also be punished or maybe even killed for thinking different then their "brothers" since it is a sin to do so. This thought occurred to me as that happens in the Divergent.

I don't really agree with you because I don't think The Hunger Games is very similar to Anthem. Maybe the punishments (consequences) are kind of alike, but what causes the punishment is a little different. In addition, Equality 7-2521 broke many laws, which technically means he disobeyed the leaders. In the beginning of the book it evens states, "...We have broken the laws." Therefore, I don't think those two stories are very similar to each other.

    Thank you,
    Gabi

  2. Ariana, your images are great and I think you connected Anthem and Divergent good. But one of the things that you can improve on is to add more to when you are talking about how Anthem is like The Hunger Games. This is because you just end when you are explaining your thoughts, when you should add and transition to your conclusion instead of ending right away.

  3. Ariana-
I agree that Anthem connects with Hunger Games as whoever broke the law, as one of their punishments, they get their tongues chopped off and would have to be servants to the Capital. You could add more details to your explanations, like talk more about the punishments in Anthem and in Hunger Games, to compare them more. You used very good images, and your information is good.
