After reading part 5 and 6 of the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, I decided draw the so-called "Master Piece" that Equality 7-2521 built in his fort. This object is described as "a box of glass, devised to give forth the power of the sky of greater strength than we had ever achieved before. And when we but our wires to this box, when we close the current -- the wire glowed! It came to life, it turned red, and a circle of light lay on the stone before us." is a lamp for us now a days. What I like to think of it as is that this description is the inside that we do not see from lights. The small flicks in yellow represent the light the box is projecting. The reason I only drew the character's hand is because in another part of the story in which the author describes the darkness around this glass box of light after blowing out the candles, he tells us how only Equality 7-2521's hands were being illuminated. Lastly, the reason why I chose to draw this specific object is because this is the first thing that Equality 7-2521 is risking to show the other men his accomplishments knowing he can get into a lot of trouble by being independent.
Julia, first of all, your drawing is amazing. I can't even imagine the fact that you drew it. Congrats.Second,I would like to talk about how not every image and part of the image had a literal meanng. Such as how you interpeted the description into your own words. The way that I interpeted the description, is that Equality 7-2521 has realized, that if we want to do something, he just has to keep on trying. And that if he is able to do that, he can conquer anything. He can even conquer the things he though impossible his whole entire life. Thanks for extending my thinking! Jonathan
ReplyDeleteJulia, I thought it was an awesome, innovating, and unique idea that you had, to draw this part of the book. I had already done this role and I never thought about drawing a object, just about drawing people or settings. That was very great of your part to move my thinking forward and take it to another level. I also thought it was great how you explained every single part of the drawing very deeply and in a way that was somewhat interesting. The idea of drawing the hands was also very engaging because it was something that you had to "research" to draw down. You managed to draw exactly what the author described the glass box to be, and you even included the aspect of the hands that were holding it. You show that you really understood this scene and that helped bring my thinking to another level.
ReplyDeleteThese angles were great, but there was something, for me, that stood a little unclear in the end. What were these scribbles all around the box? Didn't you say it was similar to a light bulb? How does it relate? After all, it was a great post and you really accomplished to move my thinking on to another level. Congrats! (Oh, and by the way it was great how you added the imaged source, from the first image...)
