Word Whisperer

1.
Personification:
Saying: Yet here was light, light that came from nowhere, light from the heart of metal.
The Meaning of the stylistic device:
The meaning of this stylistic technique is to relate an animal or an object to human characteristics.

The effect on the story:
This personification phrase, light from the heart of metal, is important, because when Equality 7-2521 made electricity he figured out the light is from the metal. Also, he said it came from the heart of the metal, which means it came only from the metal.

2.
Repetition
Saying: Take our brother Equality 7-2521 to the Palace of Corrective Detention.
The Meaning of the stylistic device:
This means the author kept writing the same sentence, words, sayings over and over again.

The effect on the story:
In the book, everybody keeps saying Equality 7-2521, even if they don't have to say it. Also, in the saying it also says the Palace of Corrective Detention, these words are over used, because they are always explaining about even when it's not necessary. The author shouldn't be always saying these phrases and words, they should only be used when they need to be used. Also, these words need to be used in the right context.

3.
Simile
Saying: The first blow of the lash felt as if our spine had been cut in two.
The Meaning of the stylistic device:
Simile is when comparing two things together.

The effect in the story:
This phrase shows not tells and describes how it feels to be lashed. This shows that how much anguish and agony they Equality 7-2521 is in. This also relates with the second phrase I did, because they are getting beaten in the Palace of Corrective Detention.

4.
Simile
Saying: A flaming grill kept dancing before our eyes, and we thought of nothing save that grill, a grill, a grill of red squares, and then we knew that we were looking at the squares of the iron grill in the door, and there were also the squares of stone on the walls, and the squares which the lash was cutting upon our back, crossing and re-crossing itself in our flesh.

The Meaning of the stylistic device:
Simile is when comparing two things together.

The effect in the story:
This phrase shows the flaming grill dancing before them. This means they are seeing flames right in front of them and they are moving all around, looking at their pain. Also, it shows the pain and anguish they are feeling from the lashes of the whip.

Word Whisperer- Parts 3 & 4

In these two passages that we read it was quite simple to find rhetorical techniques used in Ayn Rand writing. The two techniques that were very evident were imagery and repetition.
Quotes:

Imagery:
"Many days passed before we could speak to the Golden One again. But then came the day when the sky turned white, as if the sun had burst and spread its flame in the air, and the fields lay still without breath, and the dust of the road was white in the glow. " (First Paragraph of Part Four).
Imagery is a style that make the reader picture a image in there mind. The image I imagine is Equality thinking that everything become perfectly different because they were seeing each other after many days. In my opinion, this quote has a positive effect on the story because it shows the importance that the Golden One has on Equality. If the quote were written without imagery this meeting of the two again wouldn't be so important and so symbolic to the story.

Repetition:
"We do not care. We forget all men, all laws and all things save our metals and our wires. So much is still to be learned! So long a road lies before us, and what care we if we must travel it alone!" (Last sentences from Part Three).
Repetition is show dramatize an idea that should stand out, and the repetition in these sentences is of "we". This repetition makes the part of the text powerful, and a quote that pop out. In my point of the view the whole point of having repetition of the "we" in this passage is to accentuate that they are a group, that they are different. The effect of having this "we" is again positive because it shows why the whole point of "we" being used in this book.

Imagery:
"Then they knelt by the moat, they gathered water in their two hands, they rose and they held the water out to our lips."
The image that I imagine when I read this quote is a small, dainty, and blond group of girls going slowly to the water and carefully getting water for Equality in there little pale hands. When the author has imagery that is effective it is a very good way to engage the reader into the text, and Ayn does a spectacular job at using imagery in the passage. I really enjoyed how she used imagery once again to make the book more "mystical" and a funner read.

Repetition:
"Then the Golden One moved away, even though no others were coming, and they moved, stepping back, as if they could not turn from us, their arms bent before them, as if they could not lower their hands."
The repetition in this passage is a bit different from the usual repetition. The difference about this kind of repetition is that the author repeats the same thing using different words. Any says "going away" three times, except she says them in different ways. I think that she does this to show how Equality was so unhappy when she started going away from them. This is a very clever way to show the glom of Equality when Golden One leaves then to just say that he got sad. The effect that I received from this technique was very positive once again, because these literary techniques were very helpful to understand that quite confusing passage.
