Job #4 Question Commander Jonathan Gringauz

Job #4 Question Commander Jonathan Gringauz

Does Equality 7-2521 ever want a word to describe himself only, such as I or me?
I don't think so, I think that he has lived in this brainwashed society for so long, that he never even needs a word to describe himself. By using the word "we" so often, Equality 7-2521 may feel more united with his counterparts and the rest of his society. And can therefore be a bit more confident about himself. I think that the purpose of this rule is to make the society feel more united and together. Like they are all equals and will be there for each other always.

Why is everyone so afraid of everything new in this dystopian society?
I think that the reason why everyone is so afraid of everything new, is because the people of the unmentionable times were destroyed by new object or beings. And so this new society is so terrified of everything new because they are afraid that it will destroy there society. This is very similar to the book the giver, in many ways because the society also lived in "sameness"

Do you think that Liberty 5-3000 has the same desires and questions as Equality 7-2521?
I do think they have very similar objectives. Based on there actions throughout part two of the book, I can tell that they both are friendly, like each other and do not "play by the rules". Guessing on  Liberty 5-3000's actions, I believe that she would like to discover more about the unmentionable times, and anything that she questions. Continuing, both Liberty 5-3000 and Equality 7-2521 are "weird" compared to there rule abiding counterparts.

  1. For you first question I believe much later in the book he will want a word such as I to describe himself. But at this moment he will not question it due to the amount of time spent without a word to describe himself and how many other things that he could question.
On your second question we do not really know if they are afraid of new technology due to the fact that no new things have been proposed to prove this. However, we do know that they are afraid of the unmentionable times. We could assume that the unmentionable times had advanced technology that caused problems and that is why they are afraid of advancements in technology.
I do not think that liberty 5-3000 has the same desires as our main character, due to the fact that she has not shown anything hinting towards the desire to discover. She has hinted to compassion for our main character, but nothing towards the desire to discover. I quote “Guessing on Liberty 5-3000's actions, I believe that she would like to discover more about the unmentionable times, and anything that she questions.” What actions hinted towards this?

  2. Interesting questions. I would say for question number one:
We learned that Equality 7-2521 is young, tall, strong, fearless and brilliant. He's so superior to everybody, but seems to have one weakness. The weakness in him is the initial sense of guilt he's inherited from his society. I think later with his own researches in his whole he will find out how to re invent the light bulb. read philosophical books about meaning of life and will learn to use the word I. For now, he doesn't even know this "I" words exists, since he has been taught to use we or our brothers. You can't blame the boy, its what he is used to and knows to say. It common for him they same way we say I. Question two:
I think everyone is afraid since it's has been destroyed in the past, they think its something horrible and dangerous. But what I have learned from Equality 7-2521. because of his main driving force is curiosity, I have a feeling he will start experimenting and making conclusions about the past underground. So maybe he can teach the others that it is amazing science from the past and it isn't dangerous. Question three: Liberty 55-3000 also has a mind of her own, and also refuses to blindly follow the authorities. I believe that they also violate the laws and the customs of her society to pursue her goals. An example, she observes the Equality 7-2521 and thinks of him, though the state forbids a woman to take notice of men except at the Time of Mating. She will walk boldly to the hedge bordering the road and look him in the face. She even smiles at him, and they speak to each other with their eyes.

  3. Jonathan,
Great questions. For the first one I think that if Equality 7-2521 learned that words describing only himself existed he would want to use them acknowledging his past as a rule breaker. But in his world these words do not exist so I think that in this place in the book he does not want to use them wants to use them.
For the second question that you came up with, I think that the people in this society might seem to be afraid of new things because they have absolutely no way to know if that particular new thing was the thing that destroyed the people and civilizations of the unmentionable times.
And finally, I think that there is no way to know yet if Liberty 5-3000 has the same desires as Equality 7-2521 because we know next to nothing of her character.

  4. Jonathan, I agreed with you on all your responses, only there would be somethings I would also like to add. On your first question, I thought the following, I believe that Equality doesn't even know what the word "I" really means since none of the people in this society ever mention, mentioned, or ever will mention this word in their lives. For Equality, as well as for all the other citizens in this city, "I" means nothing at all and it will probably stay like this for a long time.
For your second question, I thought that everyone was so afraid of everything new in this dystopian society because the people don't know it these "new things" were the things that could've destroyed the civilization during the unmentionable times.
Lastly, for your last question, I though that Liberty and Equality have the same desires because, just like Equality, Liberty seems to be a person that likes to "study" or to find out more about the unknown. Although, as Katie mentioned, we know close to nothing about the character, Liberty, I still imagine her having similar personalities to the other character, Equality.

  5. Does Equality 7-2521 ever want a word to describe only him, such as I or me?

--> He does not think of describing himself as "I" because, like you have said, Equality 7-2521 is already used to this idea of one for all. Another way to think of this situation would be putting our selves in their society. We do not feel the need of referring to ourselves as "we" since we have grow up speaking as individuals.

Why is everyone so afraid of everything new in this dystopian society?

--> Everyone is afraid because they are not used to such discoveries and knowledge. This is almost like The Giver because in the dystopian society allows the people to only know and understand up to a certain level, and only those like the receiver and Equality 7-2521 have the other qualities that surpass the rest.

Do you think that Liberty 5-3000 has the same desires and questions as Equality 7-2521?

--> Once again, I agree with your response to the question. Liberty 5-3000 has shown that she is also guilty of being "evil" as the narrator describes it. The action to wonder and keep secrets is being evil to the society. Everyone is expected to be the same, act the same and think the same. Therefore, being different is the most offensive action there is. In conclusion, we can only predict that the woman is alike Equality 7-2521 because we know close to nothing about her.

  6. Does Equality 7-2521 ever want a word to describe only him, such as I or me?

I do believe so. For the past few years, we've been studying and reading novels about "who am I" kind of books. People discovering about themselves. As a lot of people like to say, think outside the box. Usually, those Equality 7-2521 type of people are the first ones to do that. So I believe he will discover himself and find a word to describe him.

Why is everyone so afraid of everything new in this dystopian society?

Just like in real life, we are afraid to try, eat, experience new things, because we don't know what it can do. It's a box full of surprises. When experiencing something new, you always have that feeling of fear in you. Sometimes, it's so much knowledge for you to drain, that instead of helping you, it's scaring you.

Do you think that Liberty 5-3000 has the same desires and questions as Equality 7-2521?

To be honest, I have to agree with Katie. We have no information about her whatsoever. Maybe yes, maybe no.

  7. Hi Jonathan, your questions are thoughtful and your images correspond with your questions/answers. Therefore, your post is very organized.

    1) Does Equality 7-2521 ever want a word to describe himself only, such as I or me?
No one in the society does so as it even states in the book that "We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike." Since they are all 'alike' or at least supposed to be, why use 'I'? The society they live doesn't not allow people to be their own independent person. It is a sin to be alone. As it states on the book, "The laws say that none among men may be alone, ever and at any time, for this is the great transgression and the root of all evil." Equality 7-2521 even though it was "strange to see only two legs stretched on the ground, and on the wall before us the shadow of our one head."This shows us it is not something he is used to.

    2) Why is everyone so afraid of everything new in this dystopian society?
New is the unknown so maybe the society is afraid of knowledge. People from the unmentionable times had different understandings and knowledge from the ones they have now. I think the society or the rulers are afraid of something that happened or something the people from the unmentionable times knew, which led to their extinction. Overall, people might be afraid the same thing will happen to them.

    3) Do you think that Liberty 5-3000 has the same desires and questions as Equality 7-2521?
In a way yes because both broke the law of not talking to members of other communities. In the book it states, "We had broken so many laws, and today we have broken one more. Today, we spoke to the Golden One." The Golden One also spoke to them which might mean she is also curious to learn new things. Unlike Liberty, I think Equality in going to be 'the one and only who challenged the society and ended up changing it.' I think Liberty doesn't have the courage Equality has to do those sorts of things, so in that aspect they are very different.

    Thank you,
    Gabi

  8. Giulia,

I completely agree with the comment you have directed to Jonathan. None of the people in the society know what the word "I" expresses, since we can say all men and woman have been brainwashed to recognize themselves as equals. Looking from a different perspective, there is a large possibility that the so modernly used "I" is the word Equality 7-2521 refers to as being the Unspeakable Word.

    1. Thinking about it now, Julia J. I agree with you. Before, I hadn't stop to think about this clearly, but now that you mention it, I totally can relate. Maybe this unspeakable word (I) came from the Unmentionable times. I actually now believe and am almost certain that the unspeakable word (I) was created or started being a restriction during the Unmentionable times. Thank you for moving my thinking forward!
