Historical context
Anthem
Antonio Fernandes
Ms.Hancock

Ayn Frank+ Equality= Anthem ???

Anthem, is a very interesting book written by Ayn Rand, in which for some people it can be very confusing. Many people find it very confusing because this book was written in first person without using the words I, me or my. No one knows for sure what year this book takes place; in the future, the present, or the past, but it is predicted that the book describes an age in which electricity wasn`t discovered. The protagonist Equality 7-2521 reminds me a lot of Ayn Rands, how his curse,"curiosity affects him.

Ayn Rand was born in St.Petersburg in Russia, 1905. She taught her self to read when she was 6 years old. In 1917 she found herself in the middle of the Bolshevik revolution. To run the revolution her family decided to move to Crimea were she finished her high school. In Crimea she loved the USA history, how their nation became a nation of free man. That is influenced the book Anthem. Anthems theme is a place in which no one has power only the government in which had absolute power. Ayn Rand probably got inspired to write this book because of the USA that got their freedom. Also, Ayn Rand has lots of curiosity. For example, after graduating in 1924, she experience the disintegration of free inquiry. We can also see Equality 7-2521 being someone very curious, for example Equality says," Oh we have been born with a curse." This passage shows that he does`t like to have the characteristic of curious, he does`t want to be curious. As you can see Ayn Rand influenced this book by using some characteristics of her to the book, and using some of the people or groups that influenced her life.

Equality 7-2521 sees the world different. He wants to go to the forbidden land, he wants to explore things that were lost in the past. For example the sentence," "It makes the needle move and turn on the compass which we stole from the Home of the Scholars; but we had been taught, when still a child, that the loadstone points to the north and that this is a law which nothing can change; yet our new power defies all laws." Equality knew that the governments were hiding something. He knew that their existed this power in which the governments were not talking about.  Another example is when he finds the underground railroad." "The walls are cracked and water runs upon them in thin threads without sound, black and glistening blood." Many people would never enter their, or even hid what they found, but Equality 7-2521 was different. He did not care in being in that place. He did not care to try to hide that place, he did not care to disobey the law. Equality saw the world different, just like Anne Frank.

  1. Antonio, great post! I really like your post explaining about how the author influenced the book but it would be better if you would had added the question into the writing. Also I think you could next time lessen the mistake of double spacing. Adding on, you could probably add more information and connect more to the pictures you put. About Anne Frank and the compass. But otherwise, great post, and I think you could do better!
