Line Illuminator- Daphne M

Anthem by Ayn Rand
Chapter 7-8
Daphne M

How does the protagonist change from the beginning to the end of the novel?  What does this character learn about himself (or herself) and about how the world works?

To begin with, Equality 7 - 2125 began by being a drop in an ocean. He was just a normal person the community wanted him to be. He wasn't and individual, until he started to want to do more and discover more things. For example, when he invented the light bulb, he was thinking out of the box. But when he showed it to the World Council of Scholars, they rejected his idea. They thought of it as a transgression and decided to stick to tortes and candles. As a result, Equality 7 - 2125 ran away into the woods where he transformed his point of view. After running through the woods, he stopped to look at his own reflection for the first time. He was astonished and finally started to see himself as an individual.

I predict further in the book, he will want to change people and convince them about them real self. Additionally, he will finally stand up for the good of all the community, the truth.

  1. Hi Daphne,
I really like your post, and I thought your metaphor in the first sentence was really creative. Tb begin with, I agree with what you said that throughout the novel, Equality 7-2125 changed from being the same as everyone else to becoming a more curious person. But, I think it goes further then that. I think that Equality 7-2125 sees himself more as an individual, unlike before where he was only one of the brothers of the community, and was not distinct. Furthermore, when reading this book, I also noticed that after he went into the forest, this sense of individuality started to shine in him, and he discovered that laughter and eating are not things that should be automatic and, in a sense, emotionless, but they should be pleasureful as well. What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Lucas T.

  2. Daphne,
I agree with your post, it was really good. I really like how you said that Equality 7-2521 began by being a 'drop in the ocean', that was a very creative way to think of him as. Yes, he didn't become an individual until he started doing things on his on, and thinking beyond. I thought that was a very neat part in the book, when Equality 7-2521 saw his reflection for the very first time. I bet he felt incredible! I also think that in the future Equality 7-2521 will change people and change the society in which he lives in. He will change it for the better.

  3. Daphne,

Even though you didn't write much, the image you chose was really reflective. First of all, I agree very much with your main idea about discoveries changing the character. I think that discoveries are what changes everything/anyone because you learn things that you are curious about. Therefore, going even deeper with your discovery may aid your knowledge in various ways. Although your discovery might be as small as finding out the atomic number of a chemical, you are still learning something that was blank in your mind leading you to having more comprehension about certain things. As a matter of fact, I can see how the reflection of the bear in the image shows the truth about this dystopian world.
