Illustrious Artist - Alejandro Alvarez

Alejandro Alvarez
Illustrious Artist
Parts 11-12
Anthem by Ayn Rand
This image is made to represent the bleakness, monotonous, and vague life of Equality before of his escape and the discovery of 'I', which is why the book is composed of variants of gray. Illuminating Equality and the book, though, is the letter 'I', made so bright and contrasting in order to represent the impact that it has had on his life. The word 'I' is so important because the community Equality used to be a part of used to be all about 'we', rejecting everything that is made by individuals, making it an extremely inefficient and "grouped" society. The tears located slightly above the book were added to show the relief and happiness upon the discovery of individuality (or at least complete individuality, as Equality had thoughts of it beforehand), which are in the shape on tears from the tears he shed while reading the book (which took him to discover the 'forbidden word'.) The relief is mostly caused from him finally finding the word that was obscured from him for so long.

  1. Alejandro,
I really liked your post and specially your illustration! I think that you described really well how Equality felt, and how the society in a way worked. I think that individuality was important for Equality since he always wanted to express how they feel about the Golden One, and this helped them develop their relationship. Finally, I think that without individuality, this society would go little by little into a worst scenario, and maybe even go into extinction. Do you agree?

  2. Alejandro,
Your post shows great depth, as the Illustration deepens the thought. The illustration shows what Equality 7-2521 had discovered -- the word "I" from the books found in an abandoned home. I found it especially interesting that a house was (built, not destroyed) just isolated atop of a hill, as it was put there for a reason. Was it put there for Equality 7-2521 (Prometheus) and Liberty 5-3000 (Gaia)? Why is it there?

  3. Alejandro,

I really like your image, so symbolic! Now, I understood how you said that the word "I" ended up as Equality 7-2521's savior because it taught him how to make an individual of himself. Further, I partially agree with you because the word "I" was the word that represented the "ego" in his life. Therefore, Equality 7-2521 learned that this word would help the society move on towards success. However, I would like to argue the point if the meaning of "I" was the only thing that was important in the book. Maybe it was not the word "I" that made the book significant, but the concept of individualism towards humanism. In my opinion, the whole point of this book was to show the readers how something so dependent could turn into a tragedy.

  4. Hey Ale, I enjoyed your picture. Did you make it? It really symbolizes the letter I and and Prometheus's old community. I really like it how the I is in the book, the place where Prometheus found it, but I also see that the book could symbolize knowledge Prometheus picked up along the way. Not only that, but the color of the I could symbolize light, the invention Prometheus discovered that caused for him to flee his community. Overall, I really love your image because it has so many hidden symbolic features, such as the ones I listed above.
