Question Commander: Week 1 (Gabi Rechulski)

Questions: (Anthem  ~ Group 2)

1) Do you think this is an equal society? Explain.

MY ANSWER: Although they keep talking about brotherhood and equality they are not an equal society because even though the hierarchy they use is different then ours, they still have one. This means it is not an equal society as people are separated by job importance. For example, people who work for the City Council are in a higher level than Street Sweepers.

2) What do you predict will happen to their tunnel? Why?

MY ANSWER: Even though Equality 7-2521 does the best they can to hide their tunnel. I think someone will find out. I am not exactly sure how, but maybe someone will notice that they are not in the City Theater, where everyone should be. If that doesn't happen, I believe International 4-8818 won't be able to handle having such a big secret and will end up telling someone about the tunnel or maybe even report it to the City Council. As a consequence, the City Council will severally punish Equality 7-2521 for keeping secrets from them.

3) Is this story written in past, present or future? Provide expecific evidence.

MY ANSWER: I think the story takes place in the past as it states, "We learned that the earth is flat and that the sun revolves around it, which causes the day and the night. We learned the names of all the winds which blow over the seas and push the sails of our great ships. We learned how to bleed men to cure them of all ailments." [Part 1] This is probably before the 18th century when people still believed that the world was flat and that the sun revolved around it. These were later said to be incorrect hypothesis.  Besides that, now a days people do not bleed men to cure them, instead they take them to the hospitals. For that reason, I believe this was written in a time when people were 'cured' at home. From these examples, it is evident the story takes place in the past.

  1. Gabi,
You made very interesting & intriguing questions in your post. The one question that I do disagree on though, was the last questions you made. Although in the past humans did believe the same things about the earth that they do in the book, there are other passage that may indicate otherwise. For example the following: "But we must never speak of the times before the Great Rebirth, else we are sentenced to three years in the Palace of Corrective Detention." In my opinion, this passage shows us that the people of their community aren't aloud to talk about the world that we live in now. Therefore I believe that this book actually is happening in the future, yet I may be wrong.

  3. Gabi, you answered your questions thoroughly. But one thing you should do is add some more information to when you said "For example, people who work for the City Council are in a higher level than Street Sweepers." you should add why is the city council more in a higher level than street sleepers. This is because you finis the thought but you need to add more detail so we can understand why they are more important.

  4. Gabi,
I think your blog post is very formative and interesting. I agree with you that someone is going to find out about the tunnel. I understand your thinking for answer #2, but I don't think it is correct. firstly, in the book, it is cited that before the community existed, there were "Unmentionable Times", which I assume was the our time. Also, how could the tunnel which he found be created by the people in his home? They didn't have the liberty to do that. Additionally, in the story, they also say that all of the manuscripts which dictators wrote from the past were burned when the fire finished with everything. So, if the manuscripts with all the information regarding the earth and geography was burned, the people in his community had to start studying it all over again. Otherwise, I think you are right about everything.

    1. Marina, your comment is very detailed and brought new thoughts to my head when you asked, "could the tunnel which he found be created by the people in his home?"

I actually don't think so because as Equality says, "no men known to us could have built this place" and in the tunnel, there are also things which he has never seen before. I assume that if it was created by someone who is still alive, they would end up visiting it at some point and would notice that someone (Equality) has been there. They could then leave a note to Equality or maybe wait for them.
Besides that, even though I don't think it is true, I think it would be very interesting if the tunnel was built by Council to test and see who is trustworthy.
Maybe, if someone has also found it, they kept quiet and didn't go back, afraid to commit a transgression and be punished.
Overall I think Equality and his friend, are the only ones who know about the tunnel since Equality states, "we knew suddenly that this place was left from the Unmentionable Times."
I predict he will show it to the Golden One and use it to hide her so she won't have to go to the Palace of Mating.

  6. Gabi,
I found your post very interesting. I agree with the idea that the story takes place in the past because like you said there is a part in chapter one where there is this statement, "We learned that the earth is flat and that the sun revolves around it, which causes the day and the night. We learned the names of all the winds which blow over the seas and push the sails of our great ships. We learned how to bleed men to cure them of all ailments”, And in the past people used to think that the world was flat and that every thing went around the world.
