The book Anthem is a fiction novella written in 1937 and first published in 1938 in England. It was written by Alissa Rosenbaum, who became Ayn Rand that was born in Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum, February 2, 1905 and died in March 6, 1982 when she was 77 years old. Ayn Rand grew up in Russia during one of the country’s most worst periods. When Socialist revolutionaries overthrew the monarchy in 1905.

Ayn was the oldest daughter of a middle class family who lived in Russia. When communism came to power in  in Russia during 1917, Ayn's father's small business was confiscated, and the family endured years of suffering and danger. Any had the ambition to become a writer, but she knew that she could not survive in a country where free expression was prohibited.

Anthem is characterized by socialistic thinking and economics. In the book the civilians of the city have no say. They don’t even get to chose their job. The council makes all decisions, which I think is very similar to socialism.

  1. Pedro,

Great job on your blog entry! I really liked how you talked about the origins of Ayn Rand and how you stated the way she lived in 1917 during the Communist control in Russia. You mentioned the "outline" of her life in a very clear way, stating the important events she went through and how this inspired her to become a writer; however, I wish you had gone beyond your stating and described a little more the situation she was going through. What was this Communist control and how did it affect many people? How was Ayn's family affected? Something you should also watch out for are spelling mistakes (you had one or two). But overall I think your post was very well constructed and written, so great work!
